Facial Cosmetic Surgery/Mini Facelift
Facial aging occurs at a unique rate for every person. This is advantageous because it allows each of us to address cosmetic concerns as they arise. The development of injectables and minimally-invasive techniques has made it possible to correct various signs of aging without drastic measures. For men and women in the Manhattan area, one way this may be accomplished is with a mini facelift.

What Is a Mini Facelift?
Why wait until aging has affected the face in a profound way to reinstate your youthfulness? A mini facelift is an outpatient procedure that we can conduct right here in our office. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. William Lao conducts the mini facelift with injections of a local anesthetic. Patient comfort is enhanced with a mild oral sedative taken before the procedure. A mini lift is just as it sounds; a procedure in which particular areas of the lower face are manipulated to restore a youthful shape.
Who Is a Candidate for a Mini Facelift?
Adults who have begun to notice mild laxity on the jawline, neck, and lower face may be excellent candidates for a mini facelift. Ideally, patients will not smoke or will quit smoking well before surgery. The best surgical outcomes may be achieved with people whose bone structure and natural skin elasticity is strong.
Benefits of a Mini-Facelift
Because a mini lift is minimally-invasive and performed without the need for general anesthesia, one of the primary benefits of this technique is the reduction of surgical risks. Patients who undergo a mini lift enjoy advantages such as:
- Lower surgical costs compared to general surgery in an outpatient surgical center
- More discreet incisions and scars
- Lasting results
- Minimal recovery
- Can be combined with other treatments
- Subtle, natural-looking results that beautifully refresh the face
What Areas of the Face Does a Mini Facelift Correct?
A mini facelift is performed to address laxity issues that affect the lower face. Mid-facial tissue is accessed through small incisions in front of the ears. By reinstating the structure of the cheeks, the tissue that has begun to droop at the jawline and around the nose and mouth is lifted to appear tighter and smoother.
A mini lift can correct concerns such as:
- Nasolabial folds
- Marionette lines
- Possibly a double chin or slight upper neck laxity.
How Does a Mini Facelift Compare to a Normal Facelift?
A mini facelift focuses on mild signs of aging localized to the lower face. A standard full facelift may include accompanying procedures such as eyelid rejuvenation or a brow lift. To reposition the localized tissue of the midface, a mini facelift requires only one short incision in front of each ear. A full facelift, on the other hand, creates a larger incision that progresses from the front of the ear up and around the backside.
A full facelift involves more dramatic repositioning and redistribution of fatty tissue, whereas a mini facelift is subtler. However, both procedures accomplish results that can last years. Also, the length of recovery after a mini facelift may not be significantly shorter than that of a full facelift but there may be less severe bruising and swelling with the mini facelift approach.
Are There Any Risks to Facial Cosmetic Surgery Through a Mini Facelift?
There are minor risks associated with any type of surgical procedure, and a mini lift is considered surgery. Because Dr. Lao performs this procedure in the office and without general anesthesia, surgical risks are lower. Although a less invasive procedure, it is crucial that patients obtain a mini facelift from a board-certified plastic surgeon. This increases the opportunity for a satisfactory outcome that is symmetrical and natural-looking with minimal scarring and less risk of intense side effects.
Can a Mini Facelift Be Combined with Other Procedures?
It is absolutely possible to combine procedures as needed to achieve your desired outcome. Some patients combine fat transfer to the face with their mini lift to increase the contouring of their cheeks. Injectables may be used to reduce lines and wrinkles on parts of the face not corrected with the mini lift, such as around the eyes or the forehead. Ultherapy may also be selected as a nonsurgical approach to brow lifting. A thorough consultation with Dr. Lao can help you determine the extent of treatment you need to achieve your desired look.
How Long Does a Mini Facelift Last?
The results of a mini facelift can last years, especially when skin care is a priority that is maintained. Sun protection is one of the most important aspects of maintaining youthful skin. Patients may also enjoy prolonged youthfulness with periodic touch-up treatments such as injectables, microneedling with PRP, laser treatments, or other techniques.
The Mini Facelift Procedure
Our mini facelift is performed in a comfortable treatment room in our Manhattan office after the patient has received an oral sedative. Injections of local anesthetic are made into the area of incisions and tissue manipulation to ensure a comfortable process. The face may be marked according to Dr. Lao’s plan for repositioning.
Through tiny incisions in front of the ears, small instruments are used to gather the fibrous layer of tissue beneath the dermis. This layer of tissue is uplifted and secured to the tissue near the temple, resulting in elevated cheeks, a sharper jawline, and a tighter upper neck and chin. Excess skin is removed and fine sutures are inserted to close incisions.
Mini Facelift Recovery
After a mini facelift, there may be slight bruising and swelling. The incisions may be bandaged overnight. Some patients experience minor discomfort. This can be managed with prescribed pain medication or over-the-counter medication. The bruising that occurs after surgery can be expected to fade over one to three weeks. Makeup may sufficiently cover bruising as this side effect declines.
Due to the gathering up of tissue, the skin in front of the ears may appear slightly puckered for a short time. The face is likely to also feel noticeably tight for several days.
Will I Have a Noticeable Scar After a Mini Facelift?
A mini facelift involves short incisions right in front of the ears. Usually, the resulting scars are barely perceptible once they have healed.
