How The Cellulaze™ System Works
The Cellulaze™ system utilizes a laser to take on cellulite. In the procedure, our laser specialist, Camellia Zheng, LMA, RMA, RPT, first marks the cellulite areas to be treated. Then she applies local anesthesia to numb the area (you’ll be awake during the procedure). Next, she makes a couple tiny incisions that are about the size of the tip of a pen. Through these incisions the Cellulaze™ laser fiber, threaded through a thin cannula, is inserted.
The laser has three jobs:
- It melts some of the fat in the herniated pockets.
- It cuts the fibrous bands that are creating pockets and forcing the fat upward.
- The laser energy causes stimulation of collagen and elastin production, making the skin thicker and giving it more elasticity.
The entire procedure takes from one to 1.5 hours. Patients have some bruising and discomfort. Afterwards, we will have you wear a compression garment for a couple weeks following your procedure. In a day or two you can return to your normal activities, returning to strenuous exercise in one to two weeks. The release of the connective tissue bands creates instant results, and your results continue to improve for up to a year, as the liquefied fat is passed from the body and the body builds up its collagen and elastin.
What Causes Cellulite?
Cellulite is an almost universal condition for women, affecting nine out of 10. Many women believe cellulite is a fat problem that can be eliminated through diet and exercise. Truth is, you can lessen the appearance of cellulite somewhat by decreasing the fat cells under your skin, but you can’t get rid of it completely no matter how slim you become.
That’s because fat isn’t the problem, the structural makeup of women’s skin is the cause. Women have connective tissue bands under their skin that are like vertical bars, trapping pockets of fat between them. The fat trapped by these tight bands pushes upward against the skin, creating lumps on the surface, next to depressions where the connective tissue is separating the fat beneath. Yes, it’s the orange peel look of cellulite. And it only gets worse as we age, and our skin thins.
This is the explanation of why skinny people can have cellulite, while heavy people may not. And men? Less than 10% have cellulite because, unlike the vertical connective tissue under women’s skin, men’s connective tissue is in an X pattern. For women, genetics plays a big role — if your mom had cellulite, you have cellulite. Hormones, aging, and weight also play a part.
What Areas Can Be Treated with Laser Cellulite Removal?
Laser cellulite removal procedures are non-invasive and do not require any surgery or needles. Areas that laser cellulite removal commonly treat include the abdomen, love handles, buttocks, thighs, hips, upper arm, and neck.
What Kind Of Results Can I Expect With Cellulaze?
Cellulaze™ has been thoroughly tested to ensure its safety. That was a requirement for the treatment to receive clearance from the FDA.
Studies have shown that a single Cellulaze™ treatment improves the appearance of cellulite for one year and beyond. Skin thickness increased by 25% and elasticity by 29% even after one year. Overall, 93% of patients surveyed were satisfied or very satisfied with their results and would recommend Cellulaze™ to a friend.

How Is The Laser Cellulite Removal Procedure Performed?
During your treatment session, we will use a specialized handpiece containing the laser and a vacuum to gently suction your skin and target the cellulite in the area to melt it. Once melted, the fat cells in your body and processed and removed naturally, and the skin in the area will contract or tighten over it.
Depending on the amount of cellulite you wish to remove, you may require several treatment sessions. Each session lasts about 20-35 minutes. No downtime will be required following your treatment. You will see results from your procedure as early as six weeks following treatment.

What Are The Potential Side Effects With Laser Cellulite Treatment?
There are very low-risk procedures. There is a slight risk of skin damage, but the Cynosure laser used for Cellulaze™ has a temperature sensor to continually monitor the temperature under your skin. If the temperature elevates anywhere close to an unsafe level, the laser immediately shuts off. Camellia Zheng, LMA, RMA, has extensive training from Cynosure in these treatments, which further ensures your safety.
Are There Alternatives To Lasers For Cellulite Treatment?
You’ve probably seen far too many infomercials on TV promising that this salve or that balm reduces the appearance of cellulite. Not so much. How is a topical application going to do anything about the fibrous bands that connect your skin to the muscle layer beneath? Before adding Cellulaze™ to her menu of services at Skintology, Dr. Walden researched the procedure in detail. There is another option called Cellfina. In this procedure a blade is used to methodically cut each individual connective band. This is much more invasive than Cellulaze™, and the process is quite tedious. Using laser energy to both liquefy some fat and sever the fibrous bands is a much more effective and efficient method for addressing cellulite on the thighs and buttocks. Plus, the laser energy has the added benefit of tightening the skin in the weeks following your treatment with increased production of collagen.
FAQs
Anyone who wants to reduce the stubborn pockets of fat in their body is a candidate for laser cellulite removal. This treatment is frequently used to eliminate cellulite in the abdomen, love handles, buttocks, thighs, hips, upper arm, and neck.
- A completely safe procedure
- A non-invasive treatment
- Painless
- Permanent results
- Smooth skin following your treatment
No. Laser cellulite removal is a non-invasive procedure, so you can resume your normal daily activities as soon as you leave our office.
These treatments take between 60 and 90 minutes.
Cellulaze™ is performed with the patient under local anesthesia, so you don’t feel any pain. You can feel some pressure across the treatment area during your session, but it isn’t painful at all. Afterwards, you may have some soreness across the treated areas, but this is easily managed with over-the-counter pain medication.
These are standalone treatments. Laser cellulite reduction is a new treatment, so there aren't any long-term patient studies out there yet. The FDA cleared Cellulaze™ for cellulite reduction. It’s assumed that once the fibrous bands are severed with the laser energy they will not re-form, but that isn’t absolutely guaranteed at this point. Time will tell.
